Physico-Chemical Assessment of Water Quality in the Open-Cast Coal Mining Region of Bhurkunda, Ramgarh, Jharkhand, India

A systematic investigation was undertaken to evaluate the physico-chemical properties of water from the open-cast coal mining region of Bhurkunda, Ramgarh, Jharkhand. Key parameters analyzed included temperature, pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), total hardness, dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), and electrical conductivity. The results revealed notable variations: Temperature ranged from 21 to 26 °C, pH from 6.9 to 7.9, electrical conductivity from 520 to 1680 µmhos/cm, and TDS from 425 to 1500 ppm. DO saturation exhibited significant fluctuation, varying between 27.2 and 130.6% depending on water depth. Free CO2 concentrations ranged from 0 to 18.2 ppm, total hardness from 244 to 900 ppm, COD from 0 to 99 ppm, BOD from 1.2 to 2.8 ppm, and organic carbon content from 0 to 12.2 ppm. The findings suggest that while a portion of the water samples necessitate treatment before utilization, the majority of parameters fall within acceptable limits. This study highlights the need for regular monitoring and management strategies to ensure the sustainable use of water resources in coal mining areas.
