Open dumpsites have been a prevalent choice for municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal in India, posing a growing issue for city officials due to the resultant loss of valuable urban land. As an alternative to simply closing landfills, landfill mining (LFM) has emerged as a resource recovery method. However, the absence of effective techniques for measuring the performance of landfill mining activities presents a challenge for both city officials and organizations involved in LFM. The use of overall equipment efficiency (OEE) has been widespread in various industries as a performance metric. Yet, the original OEE has encountered limitations, leading to modifications by several researchers. In the context of LFM, a specialized version of the classic OEE equation has been developed, but it inherits certain limitations. This chapter aims to address these limitations by introducing weights to the elements of the OEE equation, creating the Landfill Mining Production Index (LFMPI). As a practical application of the index, the authors have applied the index for measuring the trommel performance used in LFM. Through analysis, availability was identified as the primary factor, followed by utilization and performance. The LFMPI for trommel serves to evaluate the effectiveness of the trommel in LFM projects. In a case study of one series trommel in an Indian LFM project, the results indicate that \({\text{LFMPI}}_{{{\text{trommel}}}}\) provides a more optimistic evaluation of production effectiveness compared to OEE. By calculating LFMPI, we offer a comprehensive understanding of which elements should be prioritized to enhance overall productivity.
