Modification in Coolant Pump Operation and Its Real Time Implementation to Enhance Energy Efficiency of Rolling Mill
摘要
Research endeavors are being continuously made to improve industrial processes through technological advancement and automation to achieve better efficiency. In this direction, research work has been undertaken to reduce the energy consumption of the milled steel industry by modification in the Coolant pump operation and its implementation in the PLC program and Drive automation. The work presented in this paper highlights the modifications done in the coolant pump operation whenever coolant is not required for running the rolling mill. Accordingly, the existing logic of the 20 Hi rolling mill has been modified to make the rolling mill more energy efficient by consuming less power during idle conditions without compromising on its performance. Designing of the coolant pump operation logic has been carried out and implemented in real-time for a reduction in energy wastage. About 882 kWh of energy savings per day has been achieved by implementing the modified operation of the reduced speed of the pump during idle timings of rolling mill operation through the logic in the PLC-based control system. This methodology has also reduced the dependency on the operator by integrating the coolant pump operation in the automation of the rolling mill process. The presented work has been implemented at Jindal Stainless Limited, Hisar in the state of Haryana, India.
