Indians have migrated to different parts of the world for various reasons. They have been attracted to the West for better economic opportunities and a higher standard of living. One such novel which explores the life of an Indian in a foreign land is The Nowhere Man by Kamala Markandaya, published in 1972. Srinivas, the protagonist, is an Indian Brahmin scholar who travels to England for better opportunities. After setting up his business in England, he brings his wife Vasantha too; they buy a house together, one major step they adopt in making the new country their “home”. Srinivas became a renowned businessman, but despite considering England as his “homeland”, he faced racial discrimination for being identified as an Indian. This chapter will explore the fascination Indians had and still have for Western lifestyles and the continuous struggle they experience on foreign shores. Srinivas’ dream of becoming a successful trader came true with a lot of repercussions; he faced racial discrimination, his relationship with his children was severed, and he died a miserable death in a country which never accepted him.
