This study investigates the migration of Tamil indentured laborers to Sri Lanka’s tea plantations and the economic imperatives driving this movement, with a primary focus on the literary case study of Mirage. Grounded in the theoretical framework of historical materialism, the research examines the historical context of British colonial policies that facilitated the relocation of laborers from India to Sri Lanka, emphasizing the economic motivations and immediate consequences of this migration. Through a detailed analysis of Mirage, the study explores the exploitation, dehumanization, and systemic abuses faced by these laborers during the colonial period. While primarily a literary study, the research subtly integrates contextual insights from historical accounts to provide a nuanced understanding of the conditions endured by Tamil laborers under colonial rule. This analysis aims to illuminate the intricate dynamics of colonial exploitation as depicted in Mirage.
