Older Adults Living in Old Age Homes: Psychosocial Aspects
摘要
Old age is a time when a person is finally settled for the unwinding phase in one’s life. In the past few years, the elderly population has increased owing to better medical facilities and improvement in the overall quality of life. Anybody would wish to stay with their family in old age but at times destiny might bring them to an old age home. Leaving one’s home and settling into a new place in old age is a challenge as the person must relinquish all his/her possessions and move out to a new environment altogether. The person may become less zealous as well. According to Erik Eriksons’s theory of psychosocial developments, it’s a phase of “Integrity vs Despair.” It’s a well-known fact that elderly feel rejected when they must move out of their families. Erosion of societal values has led to mushrooming of old age home across the globe in the past few years. Human life is very complicated, it goes through lot of experiences, and we evolve from these experiences. Most of the experiences are gained from our relationships with our loved ones. Leaving the family is a huge psychological stressor for anyone. It impacts elderly psychosocially also. Depression, anxiety, panic, somatoform disorder, organic brain disorders, etc. are commonly seen in the geriatric age group which is coupled with a lot of physical problems. These problems make them vulnerable to stress and anxiety that might result in severe depression. Illnesses increase in old age and they affect the individuals’ mental equilibrium. A gradual giving up of important roles is very distressing to the elderly.
