Ageist stereotypes have often led people to believe that elderly individuals have limited resilience. However, there is a growing literature that suggests that older adults too have resilience level like that of young individuals. The studies of resilience among the older adults have pointed out toward many other benefits of resilience apart from its importance in successful aging. High resilience proves to be a psychological asset with its benefits to physical, psychological, and well as social well-being of the older adult. It is associated with increased longevity, better quality of life, and even strong social support network. Resilience among older adults is influenced by internal factors such as psychological strengths, attitudes, and by external factors in their physical and social environment such as social connectedness and neighborhood. Understanding these factors is important for the development effective interventions for building resilience among older adults. Understanding the significance of resilience has resulted to attempts made by researchers to develop interventions to build resilience among older adults. Interventions that help in enhancing resilience includes use of mindfulness-based techniques, cognitive-behavioral techniques such as cognitive reframing, mastery development, and savoring positive emotions have been found to have a positive influence on building resilience. However, even volunteering and community involvement may be further explored to investigate its role in building resilience among older adults.
