Forgiveness and Well-Being in Older Adults
摘要
Human life span can be divided into four phases: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. People in the age group of 65 and above are called elderly. In this phase of life, there is lots of time to do what you always wanted to do. However, the physical and psychological resources mostly are compromised due to growing age. This may adversely impact older adults’ mental health. Anger, frustration, depression, loneliness, and stress are experienced due to the challenges faced by elderly in this phase. Challenges elderly can face can include children settled far away, death of a spouse, not having sufficient finances to survive, domestic abuseDomestic abuse, cognitive and memory impairment, and healthcare routine and expenses—these are only some of the many to mention. These challenges can significantly impair an older adult’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being. I have keen interest in studying effectiveness of “forgiveness” in enhancing subjective well-being. In this chapter, I would like to bring to the notice one of the major variables contributing in enhancing emotional and psychological well-being of elderly: Forgiveness.
