Psychosocial Interventions in Dementia Care
摘要
The progression of dementia is influenced by the underlying cause, early diagnosis, and the availability of effective treatment options for symptoms that affect the patient or caregiver’s quality of life. Although currently there is no cure for dementia, interventions such as reality orientation and skills training can slow down the cognitive decline. Psychosocial interventions in long-term care have the potential to improve the overall care and quality of life for individuals with dementia. Our goal is to examine the evidence and consensus on psychosocial interventions for dementia patients in long-term care. Studies have shown that behavioral management techniques, cognitive stimulation, and physical activities can positively impact behavior or physical condition or reduce depression. Other interventions show some promise, but more research is needed to draw conclusions. Guidelines highlight the importance of personalized care and consideration of the individual’s life context. Long-term care gives the opportunity for planned personalized care through individualized care plans. While it is important to base care on evidence and consensus, better-designed research is needed to strengthen the evidence base for psychosocial interventions in long-term care for dementia patients.
