Sleep and Sleep-Related Problems in the Elderly: An Overview of Psychosocial Factors
摘要
Sleep is a natural behavior characterized by rest, lowered sensory activity, and muscle activity. Overall, in developing countries, there is a greater focus on the quality of life, and sleep and sleep-related issues in the elderly are becoming particularly relevant as they are linked to one physical and emotional well-being. While there are psychological and pharmacological treatments for sleep disorders, older adults may be resistant to some of them due to unfamiliarity. Primary care physicians should screen patients for sleep problems and provide basic intervention if necessary to address this problem. Sleep conditions that are resistant to medication or cause anxiety and dysfunction in older adults should be referred to a sleep specialist for treatment.
