Turkey is in the process of “demographic transformation,” and birth and death rates are decreasing. The proportion of the older population is increasing. As the life expectancy of the older population increases, it is important to detect medical, social, and mental problems. For this reason, interventions and preventive health practices for the physical and mental health problems of the aging population come to the fore. In Turkey, various services are provided to protect and maintain the mental health of older adults and to diagnose and treat their diseases. Ministries, local governments, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, and the informal care system have an important role in the planning of these services. There is a notable deficiency in the number of treatment institutions and professionals needed to diagnose and treat mental illnesses in older adults within the healthcare system. It is necessary to reconsider the current framework for providing mental health services to older adults.
