Biosensors for Cardiovascular Health Monitoring

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a leading global cause of mortality, posing a significant challenge to human health. Early detection of CVD through effective monitoring of cardiac biomarkers is critical for improving outcomes. However, conventional diagnostic approaches rely heavily on centralized laboratory procedures and large, expensive equipment, which are time-intensive and have notable limitations. Recent advancements in nanotechnology and bioelectronics have driven the development of biosensors as transformative tools for point-of-care analysis of cardiovascular biomarkers. These devices offer distinct advantages, including low cost, portability, and rapid response, making them highly suitable for decentralized healthcare settings. In this chapter, we provide a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art biosensor technologies for CVD diagnostics. We begin with a classification of common CVD types and an introduction to key biomarkers currently used in clinical practice. The discussion highlights notable biosensor platforms designed for biomarker analysis, emphasizing their functionality and potential applications. Finally, this chapter explores the prospects of biosensors in CVD diagnostics, addressing the challenges associated with their widespread adoption. By overcoming hurdles such as sensitivity, specificity, and regulatory approval, biosensors could revolutionize CVD diagnostics, enabling accessible and timely detection of this critical disease class.
