Indonesia is a middle-power country in Asia that is beginning to be recognized for its influence at the regional and global levels. It is increasingly studied by scholars as a case of a middle power. This chapter examines how Indonesia, under the Joko Widodo (2014–2024) administration, established its identity as a rising middle power but argues that this project is incomplete. Examining the public record of the Widodo administration and its foreign ministry’s activities and statements, scholarly studies of Indonesia as a middle power whose status is contested, and how other powers and regional neighbors have responded to Indonesian foreign policy, the chapter argues that there is still a distinct gap between ambition and reality where Indonesia’s middle-power aspirations are concerned.
