Down-To-Earth Diplomacy: Connecting Diplomacy to the People and Translating Nawa Cita
摘要
This article aims to analyze the implementation of down-to-earth diplomacy that Indonesia carried out during one decade of the Joko Widodo—Jokowi—presidency. It assesses how diplomacy brings concrete deliverable that impacts the realization of Jokowi’s Nawa Cita (Nine Priority Agendas). The analysis utilizes the observation of an insider plus practitioner of diplomacy. The study finds that down-to-earth diplomacy has been instrumental in helping the government materialize the Nawa Cita. It results in concrete deliverables in trade and investment, development, the protection of Indonesians overseas, securing sovereignty and territorial integrity, and contribution to the advancement of regional and global peace, stability, and prosperity. The study also finds that down-to-earth diplomacy has been executed in line with the country’s active and independent foreign policy. It is, therefore, not transactional.
