In 2022 and 2023, Indonesia has the rare opportunity to lead two multilateral forums back-to-back, G20 and ASEAN. Both have their own significance, and Indonesia was striving to optimize its political and economic gain by setting an agenda that fits with its national interest. In G20 presidency 2022, Indonesia prioritized issues such as sustainable development, equitable economic recovery post-pandemic, global financial stability by using digital currency, and how to apply diplomatic approach amidst the Russia–Ukraine war. Then, during its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2023, Indonesia focused on enhancing regional cooperation, addressing pressing security concerns, and driving economic integration among member states. Although its roles received many criticisms such as pragmatic achievement and inward-looking foreign policy, Indonesia has demonstrated its commitment to multilateralism. Indonesia’s leadership in both forums illustrate its ability to navigate complex international dynamics and advocate for the interests of developing nations on the global stage. The goal of this chapter is to examine how Indonesia has utilized its diplomatic capabilities and strategic vision to influence global and regional policies. The discussion of this chapter will be divided into three parts. First, Indonesia’s approach to multilateralism, specifically Joko Widodo’s signature approach which many recognize as being pragmatic and straightforward. Second and third, Indonesia’s strategy in leading G20 and ASEAN. The chapter will be concluded with a critical outlook on how Indonesia would carry its foreign policy in a multilateral forum in the future.
