摘要

In responding to the US–China relations turbulence, Indonesia must skillfully “maneuver” in accordance with the Independent and Active policy. The goal is none other than to ensure Indonesia’s national interests, namely to safeguard state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and sovereign rights in the Natuna Sea in accordance with the applicable national and international laws. At the same time, Indonesia must also contribute to maintaining stability and order in the Southeast Asia region from the possibility of war between great powers. This chapter suggests that Indonesia should take on a mediating role between the United States and China in addressing South China Sea issues. Through its diplomatic efforts, Indonesia can help reinforce ASEAN unity, enabling the organization to act collectively in discouraging either China or the US from escalating tensions into open conflict.
