In President Joko Widodo’s first term, Indonesian diplomacy prioritized sovereignty, citizen protection, and economic engagement. In his second term, these priorities were reframed through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ “4+1 priorities”: advancing economic diplomacy, safeguarding Indonesians abroad, promoting sovereignty diplomacy, contributing to regional and global peace, and strengthening diplomatic infrastructure through human resource development, bureaucratic reform, and digitalization. A notable shift occurred as economic diplomacy—previously secondary—became the central focus, framed as TTI (trade, tourism, investment) diplomacy, directing diplomats to expand export markets, attract investment, and promote tourism. The book is structured into five sections: Jokowi and diplomacy; economic diplomacy; protection of citizens; sovereignty and national integrity; and diplomacy for peace and stability.
