Over the past 200 years, cholera has caused seven major pandemics that have wreaked destruction around the world. The last one to do so began in earnest in 1961 and is still active today. In 2023 about 535,000 cholera cases and 4000 deaths were reported to the World Health Organization (WHO). As only 5–10% of cases are reported to WHO, the true number of cases will be very much greater [1–3].
