This chapter examines how intellectual property safeguards the development of environmental design. First, by analyzing three revisions to the ICSID definitions, it reveals how environmental design has evolved from a singular artifact-creation activity into an interdisciplinary practice integrating ecological intelligence, cultural diversity, and lifecycle management. Second, it demonstrates how design achieves dynamic equilibrium among aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability through the three core features—integrity, human-environment interaction, and architecture-environment integration—while exploring how big data, cloud computing, and interactive technologies reshape paradigms within smart city contexts. Subsequently, using architecture, landscape, and public art as value carriers, it dissects environmental design’s critical role in shaping cultural identity and enhancing quality of life. Finally, embedding intellectual property within this framework, it identifies IP protection not only as an incentive for green technology innovation but also as an institutional cornerstone for safeguarding creators’ rights and advancing sustainable industry development. What’s more, through comparative analysis of national legislations, it proposes establishing locally adapted IP strategies. Only by integrating human-centric values, systems thinking, and diverse legal instruments can environmental design realize its synergistic ecological, cultural, and economic value.
