Boiling and drying are important steps in arecanut processing. Since several days of sun drying is needed to take arecanuts to the quality required for various applications, furnace drying becomes significant. For proper heat distribution and to carry away moisture, a forced convection system, with a fan and a downdraft design, is adopted. From the perspective of sustainability of agriculture and agroproducts, agroresidues are used as fuel. In furnace drying, the quality of arecanuts can decrease, as arecanuts may stick to the surface of furnace grates. To address this issue, an approach is presented, keeping a layer of dried arecanut as a base layer on furnace grate. This approach is similar to a technique used in iron ore pelletization. The article presents this novel approach for drying arecanut. The initial results and trends obtained from the study point to the potential of adopting the technique for manufacturing advanced arecanut dryers.

摘要
