The Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) is a critical ecological and geopolitical zone, home to diverse ecosystems and communities. However, the region is highly prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, floods, avalanches, and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). Climate change, unregulated development, and deforestation exacerbate these risks. This chapter examines the unique challenges faced in the IHR, focusing on disaster risk reduction (DRR) strategies tailored to the Indian context. Using examples and case studies, it explores how India can enhance resilience through community-based approaches, infrastructure improvements, and policy interventions.
