The article deals with a study conducted in the Western Himalayas to evaluate the willingness to pay (WTP) and local community-based approach to water resource conservation and sustainable use. The open-ended elicitation method of contingent valuation method was employed in this empirical work. The households to be surveyed were randomly selected, and 50% of the sampled households (70 households) were surveyed in selected villages. It was found that family size, income, landholding, animal unit, and education status are important factors in willingness to pay for an environmental service. A regression model was obtained using dependent and independent variables explaining maximum WTP variation. The mean willingness to pay was calculated to be Rs. 1,99,206.00 for the whole study area. Seasonal streams and mountain sources were the primary sources of water. The household water management system demonstrates a collective commitment to fairness, ensuring that local elites do not receive preferential treatment in accessing water. Villagers have established a conservation forest area, prohibiting tree cutting, land clearing, and hunting to safeguard the vital water source. Implementing a sound strategy could potentially quantify these valuable ecosystem services, aiding in the sustainable management of resources and curbing their excessive exploitation in the future.
