An Ecosystem-Based Assessment of Resilient Traditional Restoration Practices Towards Biodiversity Conservation and Ecosystem Restoration in High Altitudes of Darma Valley in Uttarakhand Himalayan Region

The ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) is a strategical framework of actions for practices involving adapting towards climate change. It harnesses both the nature-based solutions and ecosystem services, which can be linked with forest restoration as it plays an important role in conserving the essence of traditional practices and people’s benefit through environmental conservation. In this aspect, addressing the drivers affecting the restoration approaches is of prime importance, and the present ecosystem-based assessment of resilient traditional restoration practices towards biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration in the high altitudes of Darma Valley in the Uttarakhand Himalayan region can have an important path for understanding the process. The Darma Valley is located in the Kailash Sacred Landscape region of India, with significant ecological and cultural values. The present study evaluates the traditional and resilient restoration practices intended for biodiversity conservation in community-supported forest plantations in the Darma region. The study examines how local communities’ interventions such as afforestation initiatives can facilitate the rehabilitation of degraded ecosystems, increase biodiversity, and enhance the economy of communities. Since this area has the integration of native species, it improves the adaptive capacity of ecosystems to changes and threats posed by climate and human activities. The outcome has demonstrated that the retention of local people’s participation in the restoration provides long-term benefits. The results show that the incorporation of traditional knowledge with modern approaches to nature protection is quite efficient for the problem of biodiversity preservation and combating climate change impacts in these difficult mountain conditions.
