Impact of Migrant Settlements in Regional Australia: An Economic Perspective
摘要
The aim of this chapter is to review the economic benefits of migration in Australia, migration into regional areas in particular. In the early years of migration, settlement of migrants took place in and around the bigger cities. However, with congestion and additional pressure on infrastructure in bigger cities, population and immigration policies were changed to direct immigrants to regional areas. Since early 2000s migration to regional Australia became a priority for the government. This chapter finds that regional migration can play a significant role towards economic development in the Australian regional economies. However, for this to be achieved to a higher level, there is more to be done. Correct and targeted policy measures that are implemented with due considerations to regional dynamics, along with the provision of required infrastructure and support base, need to be provided in a timely manner.
