Use of Computer Simulation Models for Lean Construction Education

The current state of education in construction management is heavily based on traditional class teaching. Further, current education practices in construction have been criticized for not providing construction operatives with the skills to solve “real-world” problems or to apply theoretical concepts in practice. Therefore, computer simulation-based models are proposed for education and training purposes to demonstrate how computer simulation is helpful for construction management education, which is the aim of the study. An exploratory case study-based research is followed for simulation model development. Data was collected from precast factory observations and converted into simulation models for value stream maps, a lean construction philosophy. Responses were collected from postgraduate students pursuing construction management by demonstrating the concept of value stream maps both traditionally and using a computer simulation model. Results indicate that the simulation model has improved postgraduate students’ understanding of the concepts. They feel that such models should be integrated with classroom teaching. The study establishes the need for simulation models to educate students and train construction professionals in construction management. The study is important to academia and industry as improvement in understanding and awareness of concepts in construction management leads to improved performance.
