Digitization in the construction industry is multi-faceted. The industry is quickly embracing new technologies, from automation to Building Information Modeling (BIM) and other intelligent tools. BIM is continuously revolutionizing how construction can be approached, from design, scheduling, and costing to facilities management. However, BIM has not been expanded to include automated construction safety management functions despite the fact that construction safety is a global issue and that prior, albeit limited, studies have demonstrated its great potential. Current safety practices in India are inefficient, and the rate of onsite accidents is increasing. The conventional manual and paper-based approaches are labor-intensive, prone to errors, and futile. BIM capability can be leveraged to provide adequate site safety practice. Based on the developed working prototype of a BIM-enabled automated safety-checking model for early identification of fall hazards on residential projects, the current study proposes a framework and its applicability for infrastructure projects. The proposed model is enriched with site safety information to identify fall hazards virtually. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) safety rules and tacit safety knowledge enrich and automate the BIM. Safety checks ensure the design complies with safety regulations and is free of hazards by integrating the 3D model with established safety guidelines. The research contributes to the field of safety management by identifying the hazards at the design stage. The knowledge that usually takes place at the construction stage is brought forward at the preconstruction stage.
