In recent times increasing fire incidents in our country have resulted in higher fatalities which have been attributed to high toxic smoke exposure due to burning interior space materials. The use of fabric material in interior space is very extensive and in many different textiles, toxic chemicals are used during dyeing, printing, and finishing procedures. In case of fire accidents, these contaminate the indoor environment and can have harmful impacts on human health. Toxic gases and vapours can cause incapacitation & death if they are present in sufficient quantities and for a sufficient time. Textiles used in interior spaces are believed to be one of the main reasons for contribution to the toxic smoke and gases produced on burning. The use of toxic chemicals in the textile industry is an obligatory useful feature to the fabric to make them wrinkle-free, flame retardant, water repellent, waterproof, antistatic, antibacterial, etc. At present, the scientific literature concerning the possible antagonistic health consequences of chemical substances in the textile industry is mostly related to human exposure during manufacture and evidence regarding consumers’ exposure is considerably limited. Therefore, a very little guidance is available to Architects & Interior Designers to make choices to ensure higher life safety of occupants. This review will reflect on evidence concerning the toxicological influences of textile emissions on indoor air quality and impact on human health as well as its contribution to Fire Load to assess overall risk of a Residential / Commercial structure.
