This chapter advances a dialectical approach to biological organisation, synthesizing insights from Hegel, Žižek, and Stuart Kauffman to challenge mechanistic and reductionist frameworks. Central to the argument is Kauffman’s concept of the adjacent possible, which illustrates how biological systems generate novel possibilities through their own activity, rather than unfolding pre-given potentials. To make this argument, key Hegelian concepts, such as negativity, retroactive positing, and true infinity, illuminate how contingency and necessity are internally related in evolution, with biological systems actively shaping their own conditions of existence. Quantum indeterminacy further underscores the ontological openness of nature, enabling downward causation and bio-resonance across levels of organisation. By integrating dialectical philosophy with systems biology, the chapter proposes a non-reductionist, processual ontology of life, where emergence, historicity, and self-determination redefine our understanding of biological agency. This framework not only bridges philosophy and science but also calls for a re-evaluation of teleology, moving beyond Kantian regulative ideals to a robust, materialist account of immanent organisation.
