Exploring Emerging Contaminants: Their Sources, Industrial Role, and New Treatment Technologies
摘要
Technological, agricultural, and medical advancements have enhanced human life and introduced environmental challenges due to emerging contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Often inadequately monitored, these substances accumulate in water bodies from sewage treatment plant effluents, posing significant risks to human health and wildlife. Many contaminants, such as endocrine-disrupting chemicals, are often excluded from municipal testing, and conventional treatment facilities struggle to eliminate them. As a result, current waste treatment systems are inadequate and pose risks to human health and the environment. The effectiveness of existing wastewater systems remains uncertain, allowing these contaminants to infiltrate aquatic environments. This paper details the relevant emerging contaminants and their sources, including industrial activity, and their far-reaching effects on the environment. It also reveals novel effective mitigation impact strategies on the environment implemented to address the emerging contaminants.
