Role of Speech Rhythms in Shaping Meaning Inferences: An Experimental Study in Bangla
摘要
Language is not devoid of rhythm. Rhythm in linguistic performance can be reflected by the use of pitch, intonation, and so on. In this paper, we come up with a set of sentential strings from the Bangla language that denote attitude reports, each of which can indicate two different readings, depending on the pitch patterns it reflects. We used 16 pairs of attitude reports involving four different attitude verbs in the concerned language. In one pair of sentences, the matrix subjects are stressed, whereas in another pair of reports, the matrix verbs are stressed. To study the acoustical differences due to the change of speech rhythms, different utterances of the same sentences were analyzed using various linear spectral analysis techniques like amplitude fluctuation, spectral centroid, slope, skewness, kurtosis, etc. To verify the influence of speech rhythm variations on meaning inferences, an audience response experiment was designed using 32 target sentences, which were randomly shuffled. All the audio recordings of these sentences are randomly taken from adult males and females. A total of 27 native Bangla speakers participated in this online survey, where they were given two options (yes and maybe) regarding the truth of the embedded clauses of those 32 sentences.
