A research proposal outlines the proposed research and procedures to be followed in the research process. It tells the reader (supervisor and reviewers) and yourself about “What will be investigated” and “How it will be investigated.” The format of a research proposal varies depending on the institution, school, department, and subject matter. However, this chapter discusses the generic format of an academic research proposal. The proposal comprises three parts: (1) preliminary pages (front matter), (2) body, and (3) back matter. The body has three main chapters: Introduction, Literature Review, and Research Methodology. The preliminary pages include the title, certification, abstract, and table of contents pages. It may also include a list of tables and figures. The introduction contains background to the problem, a statement of the problem, research objectives/questions, and the significance of the study. The literature review chapter includes reviewing and presenting findings of other authors about the topic to show how the study fits in. It also presents key sections on theoretical and empirical literature and theoretical and conceptual frameworks. The sections in the third chapter, i.e. research methodology, include the location of the study, the research design, methods and tools for collecting data, data analysis, and ethical considerations. Finally, the components of the back matter are presented, including references and appendices, where the work plan, budget, and data collection tools are placed.

摘要
