Scenario-Based Ideation Tool for Concept Detailing

Concept detailing is a critical phase in product development, translating user requirements into specific features. However, the detailed design of concepts requires various other features that the user might not know. Novice students often encounter challenges during this stage due to the unstructured nature of engineering product design and their limited experience. To address this issue, this study introduces a scenario-based ideation tool to streamline the detailing process for novice designers. The study employed an experimental design involving six design students who were given a design brief and followed a pre-post qualitative evaluation. The findings reveal that the designs produced using the proposed tool were better than those created without it. Moreover, the scenario-based tool improved the quality of the designs and enhanced the overall product experience, detailing the process for novice designers. These results suggest that the scenario-based ideation tool can effectively mitigate the challenges faced by novice designers, providing a structured approach to concept detailing that improves both the outcome and the design experience. This study enhances engineering and design education by providing a practical solution to improve novices’ skills, preparing them for industry demands.
