How an Official Language Shapes Mindsets: The Effects

This chapter explores how the official language field influences political attitudes and social structures by examining the impact of language proficiency on political beliefs and behaviors. It highlights the distinctiveness of the OLF framework, which challenges the traditional ethnolinguistic approach that primarily associates language effects with ethnicity or native-language dynamics. OLF argues that language policies can extend beyond ethnic lines, shaping broader perceptions of authority and social integration. The framework posits that state-promoted languages, particularly the official language, affect political mindsets through three key mechanisms: establishing linguistic norms (exposure mechanism), reinforcing state legitimacy (expression mechanism), and shaping social hierarchies (competition mechanism). Using survey data from China, this chapter provides evidence of the three mechanisms and demonstrates that listening and speaking proficiency in Putonghua correlates with political trust and civic alignment, revealing how language proficiency shapes political attitudes across various contexts. By adopting this perspective, this chapter uncovers the complex role of official language policy in fostering linguistic unity while simultaneously reinforcing disparities in political cognition across social groups and strata.
