The Official Language Field in China: A Data-Based Overview

This chapter presents a data-based exploration of China’sLanguage policy language geography and policy history, with a central focus on the nationwide promotion of Putonghua (Mandarin). It offers a distinctive narrative by examiningProficiency proficiency separately in speaking and listening, shedding light on unusual aspects in language policy studies. Through empirical analysis, the chapter underscores the achievements of the official language promotion across various regions and social groups as a construction of the official language field. It investigates the policy’s success in standardizing language use nationwide while navigating regional and social disparities in language proficiency. In particular, the chapter demonstrates how socioeconomic factors and local contexts influence Putonghua proficiency, revealing the complex interplay between language policy, individual experiences, and social hierarchies. Drawing from survey data, the chapter not only tracks the adoption of the official language but also explores how policy initiatives impact linguistic behavior and social stratification.
