Psychiatry Teaching and Training in India
摘要
Psychiatry education in India has undergone significant evolution in response to the growing burden of mental illness and the urgent need for trained mental health professionals. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the current structure, challenges, and opportunities within undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatry training in India. At the undergraduate level, the introduction of competency-based medical education (CBME) has standardized learning objectives and enhanced clinical exposure, though disparities in implementation and faculty shortages persist. Postgraduate training, offered through MD, DNB, and DPM programs, continues to expand in scope but faces issues such as regional imbalance, insufficient psychotherapy training, and enthusiasm of trainee-trainer. Faculty development remains a cornerstone for sustaining quality education, with national-level programs and innovative platforms like Indian Teachers of Psychiatry (IToP) playing key roles. This chapter also explores emerging trends, including digital learning tools, interdepartmental collaborations, and artificial intelligence in medical education. A vision for the future emphasizes the need for equitable distribution of training opportunities, enhanced infrastructure, standardized assessments, and continual faculty upskilling. Strengthening psychiatry education is essential to bridging India’s mental health treatment gap and ensuring a competent and compassionate psychiatric workforce for the future.
