Psychiatry education is largely underrepresented in the extant medical curriculum. It is essential to adopt the adult andragogical learning principles into psychiatry education. Experience-based, self-directed, problem-focused learning approaches can potentially facilitate interest and motivate students. In addition, well-structured specific learning objectives aligned with competencies laid down by the national medical curriculum can enhance knowledge acquisition. Integration of innovative teaching-learning methods and appropriate use of media can tap effectively into the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains of learning. Despite considerable advances, challenges exist in the form of limited resources, inadequacies and inequities in infrastructure and technology, structural issues, and regulatory challenges. Addressing these gaps through curricular reforms and improved teaching methodologies can enhance psychiatry education, ultimately improving mental health care and patient outcomes.
