Attitudes, Ethics, and Communication Skills in Psychiatry Teaching
摘要
It is essential for a medical professional to inculcate qualities like a compassionate attitude, professionalism, empathy for patients and caregivers, an ethical core, and effective communication skills. Medical education plays an important role in instilling these qualities. In certain South Asian countries, achieving competency in skills that reflect the appropriate attitudes, ethics, and communication (AETCOM), has been formally included as part of the mandated medical curriculum. The psychiatrist would be an ideal medical teacher to impart these skills to the budding medical professional. This role is especially important in South Asian countries due to their cultural diversity and resource constraints. This chapter discusses the history of AETCOM and the potential role of the psychiatrist in imparting AETCOM skills to undergraduate and postgraduate medical students.
