South Asia, well-known for its vibrant cultures and rich history, is also one of the most densely populated regions in the world. Unfortunately, this high population density is paired with a significant shortage of trained mental health professionals, many of whom lack adequate training to meet the complex mental health needs of their communities. In this context, education and training in psychiatry emerge as critical pillars within a nation’s mental health care framework. Within this region, Bhutan and the Maldives stand out as two small yet unique countries. Both nations face an urgent need for more comprehensive information on the teaching and training of psychiatry, which is often limited. This chapter aims to explore and illuminate the current trends and practices in psychiatric education and training in Bhutan and the Maldives, highlighting the challenges and opportunities that exist for improving mental health care in these countries.
