As per the World Health Organization report, at a minimum, one woman fatality happens due to parturition-related complications every minute—that means almost 529,000 women per year. Approximately, most of these deaths (99%) take place in the developing nations of the world. India is also such a nation facing elevated maternal (167/100,000 live births) and infant death rates (37/1000 live births). Selection of delivery place is the most crucial decision-making process, that is why the current study attempted to examine the determining factors affecting the choice of delivery site among the women who belong to the age group of 15–49 years in West Bengal, based on the dataset of the National Family Health Survey NFHS-3 & NFHS-4 conducted during 2005–06 and 2015–16, respectively. Thus, the current study tried to focus on those issues which are responsible for determining institutional delivery and also tried to provide statistical analysis of how socio-demographic background characteristics of women affect the probability of institutional birth. The result illustrates that socio-demographic characteristics like maternal age, education, wealth index, birth order, media exposure, women’s autonomy, etc. play significant impacts in determining the choice of place of delivery. Therefore, it is recommended that the government take the necessary actions to support female empowerment and education so that they can choose delivery places on their own. This will also help to reduce maternal mortality in our nation and achieve the Millennium Development Goals 5.
