Overview of Hill Agriculture: Challenges, Opportunities, and Sustainability
摘要
Hill agriculture is crucial for sustaining livelihoods, conserving biodiversity, and maintaining the ecological balance in mountainous regions. However, it faces several challenges, including rugged terrain, climate variability, soil erosion, and limited access to markets and technologies. This chapter overviews hill agriculture and highlights its unique characteristics, significant constraints, and emerging opportunities for sustainable development. It discusses traditional and modern agricultural practices, innovative solutions for enhancing productivity, and policy interventions to promote environmental sustainability and economic resilience. Additionally, this chapter explores the role of agroecological approaches, climate-smart agriculture, and integrated farming systems in addressing the challenges faced by hill farmers. Moreover, it provides insights into achieving long-term agricultural sustainability while ensuring food security and rural development by identifying key strategies and conducting case studies from different hill regions.
