This paper presents an antenna array with circular polarization (CP) and high gain radiation for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) air–to–ground (ATG) communication. The high-order mode microstrip patch antenna is employed for high gain and CP operation purposes. Then, the patch is surrounded by a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity to improve the front-to-back ratio (FBR), which is a common drawback of the compact antenna. For ATG communication, five elements are arranged in a proper configuration to cover the area downward of the UAV body. By changing the excitation ports, five beams can be switched at 45 \(^\circ \) in either \({x-z}\) or \({y-z}\) planes. The antenna exhibits operating bandwidth from 5.43 to 5.48 GHz with a maximum gain of about 12 dBi. Besides, the FBR across the operating spectrum is always better than 21 dB.

摘要
