A Design Model for a Virtual Lab Based on Open-Source Cloud Computing System
摘要
To keep up with the pace of information technology development, students must often improve their practical skills through practical classes at universities. However, the operation of traditional labs is facing many problems due to their inherent disadvantages, such as power consumption, difficulty of failure recovery, etc. This will limit the practical ability of students and system scalability and may lead to redundant expenses in educational in stitutions. In order to overcome this issue, many businesses have promoted the use of virtualization technologies to reduce pressures on Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) such as purchasing equipment, space for devices placement, and Operation Expenditure (OPEX) such as labor costs. In this article, we propose a design model for a virtual system that includes virtual servers and virtual network functions (VNFs) that can be used as virtual laboratories. We implement our solution by establishing a virtual lab based on OpenStack, an open-source cloud computing platform, to leverage its powers such as scalability, elasticity, robustness, etc. Experimental results show that our implementation meets the practical requirements of students and can be widely deployed in educational institutions.
