Scaffolding Young Professionals in Preparation for English Group Discussions Using TalkingTree, A Virtual Reality-Based Learning Solution
摘要
Transitioning from academic settings to professional environments poses significant challenges for young adults, particularly for young professionals who are non-native English speakers. The unfamiliar dynamics of professional group discussions often lead to discomfort, intensified by the need to interact with new colleagues, tackle novel topics, and articulate ideas effectively in English. This hinders their confidence and participation, potentially impacting career growth and professional development. This research introduces TalkingTree, a VR-based learning solution aimed at helping such professionals become more comfortable and confident in English group discussions. It offers a safe, controlled environment where participants can practice and gain experience before engaging in real-world discussions. The program starts with an introductory scenario to build initial confidence and comfort and gradually introduces more complex group discussion contexts. This study (N = 6) utilizes data from pre and post-interviews, two sets of VR interactions with simultaneous researcher observation, and intermediate and post-self-assessments. Researcher feedback was used to track changes in participants’ confidence and comfort levels before and after using the tool. Additionally, it develops a standardised rubric for assessing these constructs, providing a valuable tool for educators and researchers that can serve as a guideline for future studies investigating communication skills in group discussions.
