This paper presents a study of a 7-month team-based Project-Based Learning (PBL) competition involving over 10,000 students in 2,610 teams across 7 themes. It examines the impact of prior subject knowledge, department composition, academic year and online course participation on team performance. Analysis of quantitative data revealed a moderate positive correlation between prior subject knowledge and task performance, emphasizing the importance of relevant knowledge acquisition. Mixed department teams consistently outperformed others, highlighting the value of interdisciplinary collaboration. Team member seniority and online course participation showed no significant impact on performance, suggesting the influence of other factors like teamwork dynamics. Study limitations include weak correlation between subject ratings and task performance, and skewed participant distribution across year groups. Future research should focus on establishing causal relationships, balancing participant numbers, and investigating theme preference alignment. This study provides valuable insights into factors influencing team performance in PBL robotic competitions, informing optimization strategies for participants and organizers.
