Enhancing COA Learning: A Structured Approach to Individual Contributions and Team Dynamics

Computer Organization & Architecture (COA) is a 2nd-year course for computer science students. Recently, 250 students were assessed on knowledge acquisition, critical thinking, practical skills, problem-solving and tool usage through a processor datapath design and simulation activity. Student teams designed an Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) and built a functional processor. For the subsequent batch, the activity was redesigned to focus on individual contributions and peer learning, addressing issues such as weak team formation, inconsistent individual contributions and lack of curiosity. This new strategy aimed to enhance individual assessment within team activities and improve design skills for specific processor specifications. By focusing on both individual contributions and peer learning, the activity aimed to create a more engaging and effective learning experience. Students were divided into diverse teams, ensuring a balanced mix of skills and backgrounds within each group. To prevent issues of weak team formation observed in previous activities, roles and responsibilities were clearly defined for each team member. This approach was intended to ensure active participation and accountability, thereby improving team dynamics and overall performance. Strategies to improve team dynamics included setting clear expectations, fostering a sense of ownership and encouraging active participation from all team members. This comprehensive methodology fostered better collaboration, accountability and higher-quality outcomes.
