Integrating Cultural Heritage with Engineering Education: Engaging Students Through Innovative Pedagogies

This study explored the effectiveness of application of video documentation projects for enhanced student engagement and learning in a Mahabharata course for engineering students. The research was conducted at a private university in Kerala, involving 77 third-semester engineering students from three faculties: Artificial Intelligence Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, and Electronics & Communication Engineering. The study was directed to assess the effectiveness of video documentation on improving student engagement and comprehension of the Mahabharata, as well as its effect on developing 21st century learning skills beyond technical expertise, such as communication, creativity, and critical thinking. Data was collected through a questionnaire focused on four factors of engagement: skills, emotional, participation/interaction, and performance engagement. Results indicated that video documentation significantly enhanced students understanding of their cultural heritage and increased engagement with the subject matter. Students reported high levels of satisfaction, interest, and motivation. The project was found to be more effective in demonstrating content knowledge compared to traditional assessment methods. Additionally, it fostered collaboration, teamwork, and the development of essential competencies beyond technical skills. Quantitative analysis revealed positive correlations between key variables: student engagement and interest(0.56), student engagement and satisfaction(0.45), and effectiveness in demonstrating content knowledge and satisfaction(0.57). These findings indicate that increased student engagement leads to higher interest and satisfaction. The study concludes that innovative pedagogical approaches, like video documentation, effectively engage engineering students in cultural heritage, enriching their learning and appreciation of cultural legacy.
