AI-Powered Learning: Exploring the Dual Impact of Generative AI Chatbots on Enhancing Cognitive Skills and Efficiency Amongst Computer Science Learners

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly transform computer science education by enhancing cognitive skills and improving efficiency metrics. Generative AI tools, capable of producing human-like text and content, are increasingly used in educational settings to offer personalized learning experiences, instant feedback, and content assistance. This study focuses on how computer science learners can leverage Generative AI chatbots for logic building, problem solving, decision making, time management, and enhancing their productivity. A comprehensive survey was conducted to evaluate the use, dependency, and effectiveness of generative AI chatbots among computer science learners. In this study, t-tests were conducted to assess the significance of using generative AI chatbots on cognitive skills and efficiency. The results yielded p-values of 4.008e-97 and 4.44e-85, respectively, which are significantly below the 0.05 threshold, confirming the effectiveness and reliance on generative AI chatbots. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) approach was utilized to evaluate the impact of cognitive skills and efficiency using AI chatbots. The model which will be referred to as GenAI Impact Model depicts the relationship between logic building, problem solving, decision making with effectiveness. This study concludes that AI chatbots are crucial in advancing educational outcomes by improving cognitive skills and operational efficiency, making them valuable tools for enhancing the overall learning experience in computer science education.
