Intermittent water supply (IWS) system provides supply for a short period of a day. The meeting of demand seldom happens uniformly among the consumers due to advantage prevails at high pressure zone. In most of the IWS system, private storages are used and unrestricted flow from house service connection fills up the storage. The behavior of IWS is found to be distinct while comparing continuous water supply system (CWS) that ensures supply based on demand for which it is designed. Recently, a few researchers had provided the methods for analysis and understanding the behavior of IWS while supply takes place in the unrestricted mode. This paper makes a comparative study of two existing methods, modified arrangement to suit unrestricted and a present the new approach to directly quantify the intermittent supply volume over a supply duration. A branch network available in the literature is used for comparative study and applied a proposed methodology. To quantify the degree of inequity in supply, Theil’s index and a new network deficit measure are applied to assess the mean supply deficit of IWS system. From the study, it is found that two of the existing methods provides very close results and proposed method can be used as an alternate approach for quick estimation of supply without adding any fictitious elements. It is found from the studies that both indices quantify inequity or deficit of the network effectively.

摘要
