Introduction: Refugees and Asylum Seekers in the Context of Sustainable Urban Development
摘要
The purpose of this book is to outline the circumstances necessary to guarantee that refugees and asylum seekers (RAS) are included in sustainable urban development (SUD) processes, as well as the possible role that they may play in this green transformation. The authors report the results of a study in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR). The book makes recommendations about how refugees and asylum seekers could enhance both their lives and urban sustainable development. It explores how formal and informal institutions may affect this potential contribution and offers strategies for integrating migrants into SUD initiatives at the theoretical and practical levels. Particularly in this chapter, several entry points for the study are established to introduce the background of the study to be discussed in the following chapters as well as to establish its importance. Sustainable urban development and efforts of the HK government in that regard, the urgency of addressing issues of refugees and asylum seekers in the international and HK contexts, and the importance of skills development for this demographic within the context of SUD are discussed in this chapter.
