The chapter examines how the cow, as a sacred symbol in Hindu ideology, functions as both a metaphor for cultural glorification and a tool of communal violence. While the cow is revered within Hinduism (Chigateri, 2010), it is simultaneously instrumentalized to incite hostility against Muslims, particularly under the current right-wing regime (Gittinger, 2017). This paradox is underscored by India’s status as one of the world’s largest exporters of beef, highlighting the contradictions in its symbolic politics. The chapter foregrounds the role of digital media, especially WhatsApp forwards and viral videos, in spreading rumours and manufacturing fake news that provokes mob violence against alleged beef transporters. Through empirical evidences, it demonstrates how the cow is repurposed as a communicative device for mediated propaganda, legitimizing anti-Muslim hate and reinforcing majoritarian narratives in India’s contemporary political landscape.

摘要
